Behind today's Merle Norman Cosmetic Studios lies an inspiring history. It all started in the 1920s, when an energetic young Midwesterner, Merle Norman, created her own line of cosmetics to help women care for their skin and enhance their natural beauty. Merle Norman offered free samples of her products to neighbors, believing they would soon return as paying customers. She was right.
In 1931, Merle Norman opened her first Studio in Santa Monica, California. Her nephew, J.B. Nethercutt, soon joined her in developing and manufacturing the products she sold. In her Studio, Merle Norman carried on her "Try Before You Buy" philosophy, creating customers by allowing those who came to her Studio to discover for themselves the unique benefits of her affordably priced products. Many quickly became "true believers."
Decades before working women became the norm, Merle Norman encouraged women to achieve business success by opening their own Studios. By the late '40s, Merle Norman Cosmetics had grown into a nationwide network with Studios from coast to coast.
Although Merle Norman passed away in 1972 and J.B. Nethercutt in 2004, the Company, under the guidance of Jack B. Nethercutt II, remains a family-owned business dedicated to helping women everywhere look their absolute best.

All new Studio Owners attend a comprehensive course at our Company headquarters in Los Angeles. Taught by our professional Training Department, the initial program covers all the fundamentals that Studio Owners need to know to manage their business - from product knowledge, application tips and selling techniques to Point Of Sale (P.O.S.) instruction, Studio management and personnel issues.
Merle Norman knows that in the competitive world of retail cosmetics, consistent marketing and management support is key to our success. Our Product Marketing Department consistently generates new products and a dazzling array of seasonal colors each year.
Studio Owners can utilize a variety of professionally produced advertising and merchandising materials created by our Creative Services Department.
Our Advertising Department can help develop your advertising plans. To make sure you have the opportunity to benefit from advertising, we currently reimburse 60% of approved media costs to Studios.
Merle Norman furthers the professional development of you and your staff with on-going field training courses which change focus each year, covering topics such as staffing, selling skills and makeup artistry. An advanced one-week seminar covering ownership topics takes place at our Los Angeles Home Office. And our spectacular annual Convention provides extra training opportunities, exciting new product previews, plus the chance to become better acquainted with fellow Studio Owners.
A Regional Specialist at our Home Office is teamed with each Owner to serve as a direct liaison on day-to-day matters. Our Regional Business Consultants, who live around the country, are also available to meet with Owners in their Studios, offering advice on merchandising and business-related issues. And you can purchase our proprietary Point Of Sale (P.O.S.) software system which yields practical information you can use every day in your business.
