Wild Birds Unlimited is the first and largest franchise system of retail stores catering to the backyard bird feeding hobbyist. We opened our first store in 1981 and we now have more than 300 stores throughout North America.

From the day we opened our first store our goal has been to provide the products, services, expertise and atmosphere that would give others the opportunity to bring nature into their backyards. Our stores not only offer a pleasant and unique shopping experience, they also function as a community resource by providing valuable information about birds and birdfeeding. People can buy birdseed and birdfeeding supplies at a variety of stores. They cannot, however, get the quality information, excellent customer service, specially developed products and custom seed blends that differentiate Wild Birds Unlimited from other retailers.

All of these extras create incredible customer loyalty, with our customers returning again and again to share their stories about their cheerful chickadees or to seek solutions to specific birdfeeding situations.

As with most retailers, our sales are greatest in the fall and holiday season. However, attracting birds and other wildlife, such as hummingbirds and butterflies, is a year-round hobby. In addition, we carry a high-quality line of nature gifts, and our customers visit us for Mother's Day, Father's Day, wedding, birthday, house-warming and other special gifts.

Founder Jim Carpenter opened the first store in 1981 in Indianapolis. The first franchised location opened two years later. Currently there are more than 300 Wild Birds Unlimited stores in the United States and Canada.
