Curves exercises community spirit

March 16th, 2006
The food has been piling up in local Curves locations in Jupiter and Palm Beach Gardens as exercisers join others nationwide to help local charities fill their food pantries.
The two Jupiter locations — at Commerce Lane and in the Admirals Crossing plaza — will be donating the non-perishable food to Jupiter Head Start while the Palm Beach Gardens location will be joining other Curves locations in southern Palm Beach County to donate their food to Life Steps in West Palm Beach.

"Our Curves near Abacoa is filled from front to back with food, about 1,500 pounds of it," said Leslie Winer, who owns the three locations with her husband, Bob. "The Jupiter Curves behind Home Depot already has accumulated 3,000 pounds of food, and Head Start has had one pickup already there."
The pantry was nearly empty before the food drive began, said Alison Schram, Jupiter Head Start Center manager.

"We are totally refilling the pantry and we are having our 65 families come in and take home some groceries each week. On Tuesday night, parents who normally don't pick up their children but have them brought home on the bus came in as part of a parents meeting, and they were able to choose some groceries," Schram said. "This food drives helps our families tremendously."

"Curves nationally has had this food drive for eight years, and we have participated since opening in the area," said Winer. "It's a way to give back to our community and our members are in tune with this effort."

The food drive will conclude at the end of the day on Friday at the three North County Curves.
