The United States and Malaysia have reached agreement to begin negotiations on a free trade agreement that would eliminate trade barriers between the two nations, a U.S. official said Wednesday.

The agreement will be announced publicly later in the day by U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman and his Malaysian counterpart, Rafidah Aziz, according to a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement had not yet been made.

The announcement comes after the administration said earlier this year that it was starting free trade negotiations with South Korea.
